INDIE POP
MGMTThe main genre of music we will be focusing on is indie pop which originated in the United Kingdom in the mid 80’s. It is a genre of alternative rock which has links to Scottish punk bands and the dominant UK independent band, The Smiths. The term “indie” was originally used to describe artists on independent labels. It first came onto the scene with the ‘post punk explosion’ in small shop-based record labels. In 1986 the C86 tape was released including a wide range of bands which reflected the new music scene in the UK.
Nowadays the top indie artists are the likes of Ladyhawke, Pigeon Detectives, We Are Scientists and Kate Nash. The main instruments used in indie pop are guitar, bass, drums and keyboard. The guitar and keyboard are featured heavily in most of Kate Nash’s song, the keyboard especially in ‘We Get On’, our chosen song.
